Single Phase Commercial Power Solutions

Major Components

There is no single design criteria that fits all commercial battery backup system needs. However, there are several key components that are important to understand before thinking about implementing energy storage to your commercial business.

Magnum MS4448PAEThe inverter/charger is the heart of your commercial battery backup system. Featuring pure sine-wave output and advanced multi-stage battery charging, these units are responsible for your AC output power, as well as, battery charging from the grid.

However, they can only perform one function at a time, with a very small transfer time window as it switches between charging mode and inverter mode. Typically this is 30 msecs or less and is short enough that it will not cause most electronics to reset. Check electrical equipment specifications to determine what an acceptable transfer time window is. If a true UPS system is required (uninterruptible power supply), then two units are required.

The inverter charger should be sized to accommodate the maximum instantaneous load that’s expected in the application. Typical inverter charger ratings are 2kW/4kW/8kW etc. Make sure to be conservative in your sizing and don’t forget to account for surge loads!

Unigy IIBatteries are the energy storage devices that provide power when the sun is not shining and/or the grid is down. Many owners of solar installations to not realize that without energy storage, installed commercial and residential solar systems do not work when the grid goes down!

In order to power loads while the grid is down, solar systems need to have energy storage to route the power to. If you’re adding energy storage to an existing solar system this is typically accomplished through an AC Coupled System.

While Lithium Ion and other advanced chemistry batteries are popular and do have applications, traditional VRLA batteries still provide the most cost effective energy storage mechanism most of the time for industrial, commercial, and residential customers.

DC BOSDC Balance of Systems (DC BOS) is the remaining components beyond the inverter/charger and batteries that may be required for your commercial battery backup system to operate. This can include many different pieces of electrical and mechanical hardware, including, but not limited to:

  • Communication Devices
  • Battery racks or enclosure
  • Combiner Boxes for Solar Array
  • Emergency Disconnects and Shutoffs
  • Cabling and Mounting Hardware
  • Any other required circuit protection, wiring, or switchgear
FM-80Depending on whether you’re designing a strictly battery backup system, an AC Coupled Battery Backup system, or a DC Coupled Battery Backup system, solar charge controllers may or may not be necessary.

Solar charge controllers are generally required in DC Coupled systems where DC output from the solar array is routed through the solar charge controllers directly to the battery bank. In AC Coupled systems, the existing grid-tied inverter is utilized and re-routed through a secondary inverter/charger (acting in charge mode). This second inverter allows battery backup systems to be able to be added to an existing grid-connected solar system without adding charge controllers. This is known as an AC Coupled system.

Strictly battery backup systems do not typically require charge controllers as there are no DC input sources.

Example Battery Options

MK-DEKADeciding which batteries to use for your system is one of the most challenging design options to face. Chemistry type, form factor, and voltage are just the beginning of things that you must consider when deciding what energy storage option to use. While there is always more than one option, some options may be better suited to your application than others, depending on which factors are most important to you.

SunWize strongly discourages using flooded batteries (or any battery that requires maintenance) unless the user has significant experience adhering to watering maintenance. In our experience, more often than not, the benefits of flooded batteries are counteracted by poor maintenance practices – particularly at sites that are primarily unmanned. Because of this, we strongly recommend the use of maintenance free batteries, such as VRLA or other advanced chemistries, such as Li-Ion or Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP).
