SunWize Technologies advocates a high degree of solar training and certification for solar professionals. At a minimum, we require our dealers to possess an electrical contractor’s license and/or have had formal training or certification in photovoltaic (PV) design and installation.
We encourage all of our SunWize solar dealers to obtain specific solar training and NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) Certification. In addition to technical training, SunWize recommends training and education in the business of selling and installing solar electric systems.
Solar Training Delivered by Professional Training Organizations
There are a number of professional training organizations specializing in solar electric design and installation. They deliver intensive condensed courses, typically one week long, that prepare an individual for taking the NABCEP Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge Exam. These classes involve both classroom and hands-on solar training. This is a link to the Approved Providers for the NABCEP© Certificate of Knowledge Exam.
The following organizations offer hands-on training for installers:
Boots on the Roof delivers quality solar training programs for solar industry professionals. Their popular Solar Boot Camp was created for engineers, licensed or journeyman electricians, general contractors, and other contractors looking to add solar-electric systems to their existing service. The 6 day intensive Boot Camp uses a blended learning approach consisting of instructor-led training, hands-on labs, and computer-based software tools. It teaches solar electric system design, installation, and safety procedures as well as business and industry topics important for business professionals new to photovoltaics.
The Solar Living Institute offers on-line, classroom and hands-on training on a variety of topics, including Intro to Photovoltaics, Design & Installation Intensive, Hands-on PV Practicum, Fundamentals of PV Sales, Effective PV Marketing and Sales, Economics and Finance for Residential and Commercial PV, Advanced PV Systems, Intro Into Off-Grid Systems and Off-Grid Systems for Professionals.
The Solar Training Institute provides accelerated training classes for contractors, electricians, engineers, solar energy entrepreneurs and salespeople. Their solar training programs, which are based on NABCEP task analysis, are structured to help people and companies and beneficiaries get into the solar industry or solar job market. Their courses in Photovoltaic (PV) system design, installation and solar sales help business owners and workers meet the requirements of launching a solar electric installation business or finding green collar jobs in the solar industry.
Solar Training Delivered by Community Colleges
Many community colleges across the country are now offering solar training with PV design and installation classes. While the classes are relatively inexpensive, the quality varies and the duration of the solar training is over a period of several months. Not all classes are approved by NABCEP.
Training Delivered by Trade Organizations
The National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) is the training arm of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). Various NJATC training facilities provide high quality, NABCEP approved solar training for electrical apprentices and electrical contractors only.
